Introducing a new kitten to your dog

The choice to become a pet owner is one full of rewards; our furry little friends bring such delight and comfort to the home. In addition, if you are a one pet owner, it is recommended to provide a companion. Somehow dogs and cats have gained the reputation of lacking the ability to amicably coexist under the same roof.  Sure, not all cats and dogs have adoration for one another, however, the same is true even if you introduce the same species as a companion.  The dynamic is similar to that of two humans who may or may not have a personality clash. Contrary to popular belief, there are many instances when dogs and cats become the best of friends. If you are contemplating introducing a new kitten to the family dog; there are several tips which may be as beneficial to you as they were for me.

♦ Prior to your new kittens arrival, prepare a space that will not be accessible to the family dog. Of course both pets will be very curious and fully aware of the others presence. Allow them to sniff one another from each side of the closed door. For good measure; place a few of each pets belongings in the space of the other, this will allow them to become acquainted through their respective scents.

♦ Continue with this for a few days, and note this varies from one household to another.  In my case, I felt comfortable introducing them after one full day, however, I have since learned this is not the norm. In some cases, it may take up to one week, nevertheless, you will instinctively know when the time is right.

♦ After getting little Hannah and Rex acquainted with one another between rooms, I placed Hannah in her carrier, and brought her into a common area, where I positioned her on the floor. She periodically stuck her paw out in a playful gesture as Rex observed her through the tiny bars of the carrier. I observed Rex's demeanor and could see he was playful, with tail wagging and all, and Hannah didn't seem to have the least bit of apprehension or trepidation.  This is important as we know our pets better than anyone, and can read when their behaviour is defensive or otherwise.

♦ I allowed this to continue for approximately 30 minutes and finally felt bold enough to officially introduce the two furry face to furry face.  I gingerly removed Hannah from her carrier, and set her down a few feet away from Rex, while remaining cautiously optimistic.  The two greeted one another somewhat timidly at first, but within about 10 minutes they began playing together. Rex was and still is much larger than Hannah, so I stayed close by to monitor him, as he did get a bit rambunctious at times. Before long, however, they were nestled together napping on the sofa.

I must admit, in the moments leading up to the big introduction of Hannah to Rex, I was filled with anxiety despite knowing the timing was right.  I suppose it was simply stepping into the unknown that caused this.  As a watched them cuddled together in a deep slumber, I could see it was all for naught, for I knew a bond had been formed.
