The most popular travel sites on the internet are the ones you see the commercials for on TV at all hours: Travelocity, Priceline and Expedia. Travelocity and Expedia are one-stop shopping sites where you can plan, browse and book all your travel at one time. Priceline, as well as Hotwire, are bargaining sites where you can name your price and bid for the best deal on travel. Orbitz, Cheap Tickets and Kayak are other one-stop sites worth checking out. All of these one-stop and bidding companies were rated in the Top Ten best travel sites by Online Travel Sites Review in their 2009 product comparison review. Kayak was named the best overall travel search engine by Consumer Search and also made the Top 25 list of best travel sites on the internet in an annual survey by the Washington Post.

Known for his "Europe Through the Back Door" guide books and PBS television programs, Steves' website is just as informative, even more up-to-date and provides a bounty of resources and general travel tips.
I received another call from my mother recently. She was calling from the airport, just about to board a plane with my father. They were going to take a wine and hiking tour of southern France. My feelings were somewhat hurt. They had not called me in planning or booking this trip. When I asked how they did it they told me they'd had a good teacher. I beamed, feeling proud of myself. They did it all own their own, without my help. I felt like they must have felt when they sent me off to college all those years ago. Then my mother said, "Yeah, that Rick Steves really does know what he's talking about. We've learned a lot from him."
