Decorating ideas for your home office

There is more to setting up an office than simply grabbing a chair and desk, and plugging in your computer. Aesthetics and some basic rules play a big part in home office success. The important consideratio when setting up a home office is to distinguish clearly between your work and home space. The biggest mistake was having home office in the bedroom. The common task was to create an escape from the busy, child-filled house it was part of. The home office also had to blend in with the decor of nearby rooms, such as the formal living and dining areas. This dictated the style, color and arrangement of the office furniture, and made the concealment of untidy objects an important consideration. Office need not look sterile. Chest of drawers and lamp andd a little home comfort.

Have many types of storage to accommodate different sized equipnment, such as files, books and folders. Cupboards are better for messy items, whereas shelves are useful for objects that need to be close to hand. If space is limited, and it often is, consider well-designed mobile units that fold out to form additional workspace. If your do not have a separate room for the office, use a mobile screen to define the work space. An open-plan office need not be huge, but make sure it is in visual sympathy with the rest of the home.

Make sure there are enough power points and phone/fax outlets for your equipment. There is nothing worse than tripping over extension leads from the kitchen. The management of these cables is also important. They can be hidden out of the way using cable trays below the desk's top and cable cut-outs in the desk. Wall decorated with print help create a pleasant work environment.

Put some personality on to your home office with pinboard, and every detail in your room. Use one piece of furniture and make a design statement with it - for example, and armoire for storage. Stackable cane boxes are a great receptacle for small bits and pieces. If space ins an issue, choose compact equipment, such as an all-in-one fax, phone and answering machine.

The desk is the centre of the office and should dictate the remaining furniture location and requirements. Place it near a window if you can, to take advantage of natural light and any views. Desk height should be ergonomic (72 cm - 75 cm) and the computer keyboard should sit on a height-adjustable surface. Function always dictates form, particularly when you are dealing with a disk, which has so much interplay with human body. Office chairs should also be ergonomically designed to support your spine. That way you will avoid needless posture and back problems. Have a comfortable chair nearby so you can relax for a few minutes through the day.

You will need task lighting over work areas. If all you have is a central light, you will end up working in your own shadow. Keep a jug of water and a jar of snacks nearby for an energy hit when working. If you obsessive about tidiness, choose storage that conceals the visual mess of folder, paper and books. Streamline storage and make it multi functional. For example : combine bookcase and credenza to store books, work paper as well as treasured books, keepsakes collected from all over the world and display photos. If you have a storage unit or wall behind your desk, you should ideally allow a space of between 85 cm and 100 cm, and certainly no less than 75 cm betwewn it and your desk.

The key to maintaining an organised of it is to follow religiously the age-old adage; a place for everything and everythin in its place. Avoid bright patterns and fussy detailing when furnishing home office as a small room. Rounded shapes make minimal intrusions into the space and provide much-needed storage in a stylish way.
