Morris is not a mere mascot for the popular cat food brand, Nine Lives. He was deemed the "Feline Burt Reynolds" by Time magazine in 1983. Commoners say that he was rescued from Hinsdale Humane Society in Illinois in the late 60's. In truth, he was duly discovered for his rare tabby talent by a prominent ad agency and animal handler, Bob Martwick.
Morris became the poster cat for feline haughtiness. His blas voice gave verve to the clich, dogs have masters; cats have staff. His philosophy: If you don't act finicky you are destined to lose control of your owner. B,ooks followed - Morris: an Intimate Biography, the Morris Method, the Morris Approach and the Morris Prescription. Cat Fancy and Good Housekeeping's covers were adorned with Morris's fine physique in the mid-1990's.
Other cats have vied for the spotlight. Garfield, while hilarious, is not to be taken seriously. His laidback tactics added more to his waistline than to his pocketbook.
It should not be surprising that Morris the Cat ran for President in 1988. Humans were obviously not prepared for so much charisma so he ran again in 1992. Clearly that was too soon for change. Besides, winning a Presidential election is not the only proof that cats rule! Regardless, he had 9 lifetimes to reign.
