Xbox 360 review

by Ian Black

Designed by Microsoft, XBox 360 has three types of model: The Arcade, the Premium, and the Elite.

The Arcade is the transitional gaming console for first-timers. What I mean by "transitional", is basically someone taking a break from either the Sony's hit Playstation 2 console or Playstation 3, and wanting a change in computer gaming. The Arcade isn't all that great a console, even though it is suitable for first-timers, players are going to be somewhat disappointed with it. The reason I say this is, because the Arcade doesn't have the ability to save a lot of gaming information onto its hard-drive system. The wireless controllers for Xbox 360 offer each and ever player at least 30 hours of gameplay, before having to recharge their controllers. Even though XBox 360 doesn't need a particular type of television to play on to make it look really authentic - unlike the newest installment of Sony's Playstation 3 needing an HD-TV - XBox 360 can work on any television system.

When it comes to the XBox 360 Premium-based model of the gaming console, I KNOW I'm going to get a lot better value for my money. How do I know this? Well, look at the information. XBox 360 Premium offers players the ability to play their own music on the machine, at the same time they are playing either Gears of War 2, Call of Duty: World at War - any game - they can just download their selected tracks from the Internet, and enjoy their own music selection whilst playing their favorite game. However, when it comes to the Arcade version, this compatability isn't capabale with the memory hard-drive. The Premium also has the ability to allow players to hook up to the Internet to play other players across the planet, never mind next door! The disadvantage about this, though...is that people have to pay 40 pounds - yearly - for the Net process to remain applicable to their gaming machines on the Premium. There are certain little gibets that can be attained for the XBox 360; like Internet Adaptor cables...but even if you're not keen on spending 55.99 pence on such a costly item...if you have a wireless rooter connected somewhere in the house, you can connect your console via the wireless rooter (I'm not entirely sure if players still have to pay the forty pounds yearly, if they chose to connect it via the rooter system), but it was merely a suggestion.

The reason I am not keen on the newest Playstation system brought to us by Sony...is because the price for the machine is so substantial! The machine alone costs about three hundred pounds! - whereas the Microsoft's machine costs about a hundred and fifty pounds. Also, when it comes to the PS3, I am greatly disappointed that I cannot have the ability to play normal DVDs on the machine, like you were with the previous console of the PS2. They now have something called "Blue-Ray" DVDs, the next generation of DVD accessibilty. But since it doesn't allow people to enjoy a normal DVD system on the machine, I feel this is a big, big let-down for me. Controllers themselves for the machine are rediculous! The fact that you have free Internet compatibility is something to rejoice, but it still doesn't do it for me. Even though XBox 360 still make players pay for Net access, I am still thoroughly more impressed with what I am getting for my money, than I am with Sony's Playstation 3.

There is one other model hosted by the Microsoft group: The XBox 360 Elite. This machine is inconsequential, completely pointless to purchase. Even though I am a gaming enthusiast, the fact that it has about 120GB of memory, comes in the sexy color of black, just doesn't impress me. I know the system gives me triple the amount of information I can save on the console, I don't see the point in at all. The Elite is really for the Pro-gamers, the ones that will sit in their bedrooms, playing the machine relentlessly for six to ten hours a day. This kind of behavior is just outrageous!

But I would be more than happy to purchase the XBox 360 Premium model because I am guranteed something special for enjoyment. There is also the opportunity to select a wireless and or wired controller for the Premium models, where Sony's PS3 just has wireless. I would be a bit nervous about purchasing wireless controllers, because if I put something down, and come back hours later, there is the possibility I can't find it anymore. My fear, is losing the controller. Whereas I can feel more at ease by selecting the option of a wired up controller.

A word of advice to anyone thinking of purchasing any kind of gaming console, whether it's the Playstation 3 or the XBox 360, never, NEVER stand the machine up-right. Why? The laser inside the machine, which reads the disc, can really damage the game. Lie your machines flat on the floor, but never up-right. You don't want to be disappointed in purchasing a new game like Call of Duty: World at War, and when you have been playing it relentlessly for hours, you wake up in the morning to the horrifying truth that you find a perfect circular burn mark round the edges of game disc. The game cannot be returned to the store if this happens.
