Falling Short of Happiness

He never meant to hurt me
But it was unavoidable.
He could have never known
that the love that he had for me
was never going to be enough.
Good intentions turned into empty promises.
But in the end there was no one to blame.

He told me goodbye
Silence filled the room
as tears filled our eyes.
There was really nothing left to say.
Though my tears may have gave him pause,
he knew that he had to walk away.
For the only thing left for us to do
was to go our separate ways.
Let go of what we had
and stop fighting for what would never be.

Our love ended that day to the
bittersweet sound of goodbye breaking my heart.
As he looked back at me one last time,
it was plain to see that falling short
of happiness was tearing him apart.

And so he left just as he had came.
He went back to his life
and left me to mine.
Ending our happily never after
a little more scarred
and a little more jaded.
A leap of faith gone wrong,
and we all fall down.
