Dog breed: Flat-coated Retriever

moderate bone without being coarse or fine. The head is long with a fairly flat skull and a long, deep muzzle. The head is sufficiently strong to retrieve a large bird or hare without difficulty. The expression is alert and kind, the eyes almond-shaped and dark with tight, dark rims. The eyes are set wide apart, the ears lie close to the head and are heavily feathered and relatively small. Large open nostrils, strong jaws and clean, dry lips all contribute to his success as a retriever. Black dogs should have a black nose and liver dogs a liver nose.

The neck is quite long, clean and moderately arched. A deep rib cage and chest gives plenty of room for heart and lungs and there is a moderate tuck up. The loin is strong, topline level and tail fairly straight and carried merrily but without curling. The legs are straight and strong with round or oval feet, well arched toes and thick pads. On the move, the Flat-Coat's gait is balanced and free-flowing with good impulsion and reach.

The most common disease is cancer with hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy and diabetes occasionally seen but, generally speaking, they are hardy, healthy dogs.

The Flat Coated Retriever has been called the Peter Pan of dogs. He stays cheerful and playful throughout his life. While he may warn of a stranger approaching, he is then happy to be friends. He can be trusted with children and is resourceful and versatile as a hunter. His gently waving tail is in perpetual motion, signalling his good nature and affection. He will not be happy without human companionship and will form strong bonds with his handlers. He will become unhappy if left to his own devices and not included as part of the family.

In general he is tolerant of other pets, particularly if socialised when young. He may be a bit boisterous for young children or not-too-steady oldies but there isn't an ounce of vice in his friendly body.

Such a working dog obviously requires exercise but don't overdo it till his bones and joints have had a chance to mature. He has great endurance in the field but will be just as content with moderate exercise. He loves the water, is a natural swimmer and will be happy to join in any activity.
