As a heterosexual man married happily to a woman, I love my wife deeply and value the sanctity of our relationship.

However, in the modern world, marriage has become a legal institution only. By marrying someone else, this affects your taxes, rights to see this person in an emergency, rights to see this person in certain incarceration situations, and decisions to "pull the plug." That is all.

The religious aspect of marriage has been rendered obsolete by the rampant divorce rate. Most people do not truly link marriage to anything holy in the western world anymore.

Therefore, the only difference between a heterosexual marriage and a homosexual marriage is the fact that in a homosexual marriage the people are of the same sex. Since homosexuals already openly have the sexual and emotional relationships, it is only logical to grant them the same legal benefits and make them go through the same painful experience of divorce as well.

The only logical argument against homosexual marriage (can you tell that I'm a logical guy?) is that by granting legal status to homosexual couples, then this will make it more socially acceptable in the eyes of children and lead to greater rates of homosexuality.

All emperical evidence supports this argument. Sexuality in humans has been shown to be affected strongly by culture and experience, as well as hormones. However, I feel this is a battle that has already been lost. With the rise of homosexual engagine people, the popularity of icons such as Ellen and shows like the "L word," legal gay marriage is the least of the cultural influences on the minds of children today.

So I propose that all opposition to gay marriage stems from religious individuals, and manifests as people who understandably fear their children will be influenced to violate their religous beliefs if gay marriage is legalized, and bigots who simply act without reasoning. I sympathize with the former individuals, as their fears are legitimate. However, they are using inneficient tactics. As homosexuality has become a legitimate part of mainstream culture, interfering with a simple legal issue accomplishes nothing. These religious individuals would be better served bolstering their children's love of heterosexual behavior and demystifying homosexual behavior, relegating it to a trait as simple as brown hair. As for the bigots, they can only be combatted with education, but mostly they must be seen as such and ignored, as often bigots are resistant to education for various reasons.

In conclusion, the influence of unthinking bigots is more detrimental to our society than homosexual marriage will ever be, and I see no logical reason for homosexual marriage to banned except for the fact that it will slightly increase the population of bisexuals, as people with bisexual tendencies will feel more comfortable experimenting to determine their ultimate sexual orientation.
