The learning process of a child begins from his environment and will be fully nurtured in school with the help of his teacher. Teaching is not just a job, it is a vocation. In teaching, basic responsibility of making your students learn is a must. Several teaching strategies are needed to motivate students that come from different walks of life. The call for creativity is highly needed to create learning experiences enjoyable and valuable.
I've been a teacher for five years in college. But in spite of the fact that most students in college consists of upper teens and early adults, creative teaching method is still proven more effective in motivating them to be active in class. How much more for primary school kids?
Primer kids are still on the life stage of being playful. Their basic motivation to learn is through play. This is why most primary school teachers inject games aside from singing and dancing in their teaching strategy to keep children lively and willing to learn. The basic fundamental of learning starts from perception - the use of senses in acquiring knowledge. What a child see, hear, smell, taste and feel will be retained in his memory and converted into knowledge. Psychology studies shows that learning retention of a child is 20% from what he heard, 70% from what he saw and 95% from what he did.
A creative teaching tool for primary children starts from the teacher. She must project a friendly voice tone in order for the kids to feel at ease inside the classroom. Proper pronunciation will give emphasis on the alphabet sound to make it easier for the kid to remember. Playing nursery rhymes aside from actual singing and dancing is also favorable for it will give the child an enjoyable feeling while learning.
Being creative should also reflect on the learning surroundings. Mostly, colorful designs, shapes, symbols, letters, and numbers were designed in every corner of the classroom. Design patterns that include popular cartoon characters are favorable for it will attract the kids' attention. Visual aids must be used most often particularly if you are introducing new topic. The use of educational videos is added advantage.
Games, plays and toys like alphabet blocks, puzzles and drawing boards are still part of creative teaching tools. Primary kids should be given time to explore themselves through educational games. Primary teachers must combined creativity, critical thinking and moral lessons into one and convert it into play or games for kids to experience. Examples of these can be letting the kids do art works like personalized greeting cards and give it to their parents or friends. In this manner, kids can enhance their artistic skills while learning the value of friendship and giving.
