It is an hour-long Disney Pixar animated film directed by Andrew Stanton, which was released in Summer 2008. It is both a science fiction film as well as a love story. I have seen the film WALL-E at the cinema twice. Once with a few friends, the second time with my little nephews. I think it's a movie which is equally enjoyable by adults as it is with children.
What makes the robot WALL-E so special?
WALL-E is really cute. He's small, and the kind of robot that you can't help feeling sorry for. What sets WALL-E apart from other robots in films, is that WALL-E has a heart. The whole concept of being a robot is that it is mechanical, and thus shouldn't have feelings, right? So, how can a robot like WALL-E fall in love?
The design of the robot WALL-E is excellent. His eyes have been animated in such a way to decpict a robot who is extremely curious.
The Plot -
The reason why I think the film appeals to both children and adults alike is because of the film's great storyline. The film WALL-E tells the gripping tale of a planet that has became extremely polluted. Infact it is now so polluted that it can no longer support life. A company called Buy N Large Corporation (BNL) think that the solution to the earth's pollution problems, are for all humans to spend the next five years in outer space aboard fully-automated luxury starliners. BNL create WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth) units to clean up the Earth's waste products. However, the plan fails when Earth is deemed uninhabitable. On Earth, all of the WALL-E units have become inactive except for one unit who still performs his duties: WALL-E.
One day, while carrying out his daily duties, WALL-E finds a new plant growth amongst the trash and hilariously places it in an old shoe, thinking that this is a safe place to keep it. Later in the story, WALL-E meets and falls in love with a sleek, white probe: the Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator (known as EVE). She has been sent to the Earth to look for plant life. WALL-E shows her the plant that he found earlier. This initiates EVE's automatic programming, and also cause her to grab the plant and store it inside of herself. This in turn sends out a homing signal for her spaceship, the Axiom, and she shuts down. WALL-E is distraught at seeing EVE shutdown, and EVE's spaceship later returns to collect her.
When EVE reactivates, the plant is discovered to have gone missing, but it is eventually found and returned to the Axiom's Captain. The Captain becomes aware of Earth's ravaged state, but sees the plant as proof that life is again sustainable on Earth.
However, there is a twist to the story: the ship's autopilot "Auto" had received a final directive a long time ago, incorrectly stating that Earth had become too toxic to ever support life again. This protocol, known as the A113 protocol instructs the autopilots to stay the course in space, ensuring that the Axiom never returns to Earth and telling the autopilots to stay in space. In his attempt to return home to Earth, the Captain finds the energy to battle with Auto. The Captain deactivates him, allowing the plant to be placed in a holo-detector which activates the process of sending the Axiom back to Earth.
The film comes to an end, showing scenes of the humans from the Axiom, taking their first steps on Earth, and carefully replanting the seedling that brought them back. So all is well, that ends well!
