The successful actress Katie Holmes, was born Kate "Katie" Noelle Holmes on December 18th, 1978 in Toledo, Ohio. She has four siblings, and is the youngest in the family of five. She is well-known mainly for her role as Joey Potter in the hit television drama series Dawson's Creek, but more recently also because of her marriage to Hollywood celebrity Tom Cruise.

At the age of 14, she enrolled into a local modelling school. In 1996, her modelling experience allowed her to attend the International Modeling and Talent Association convention (IMTA) in New York. Her acting career was then jumpstarted by her role as Libbets Casey in the 1997 film, The Ice Storm, in which she starred alongside the likes of Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver and Elijah Wood, and the movie won a screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival.

In early 1997, the screenwriter for Dawson's Creek, Kevin Williamson; asked her to audition for the show. However, as she was already busy with performances of a school production of Damn Yankees, where she was playing the lead role of Lola; she declined the offer. The producers of the show were still very keen to see her audition, and thus allowed Holmes to audition via videotape. She auditioned for the part of Joey Potter, Dawson Leery's best friend, with Holmes' mother reading the lines for Dawson.

When Paul Stupin, executive producer of the show and Williamson watched the audition, they asked her to audition in person as well. They immediately fell in love with Holmes' acting skills and knew that she was the right person to take the part of Miss Potter. Holmes acted in the pilot episode of the show, during spring vacation of her senior year at high school in 1997. She moved to Wilmington in North Carolina, where the show was to be fimed, although she had planned to go to Columbia University during this year.

The character Joey Potter was named after the headstrong character Jo in Louisa May Alcott's novel, Little Women. In the television programme the character is known for being a tom-boy and for being the girl from "the wrong side of the creek" in the small town of Capeside.

Dawson's Creek first aired on American TV on January 20, 1998 and the show finale was aired on May 14, 2003. Although the title of the show is themed around Dawson Leery, Holmes' character Joey Potter, is the only character to have appeared in all episodes of the show. When Dawson's Creek ended, Holmes moved to Los Angeles and enetered the world of films. Although she was sad to leave
