Reflections: Choices

by Lori Davis

Created on: November 25, 2008

Throughout life we make choices, and the choices we make, whether right or wrong will usually reflect our future. We all have faced circumstances when a decision must be made and there are times when the decision is tough. This can pertain to finances, physical or emotional conditions, relationships, etc. We all face these times in life, some similar, some different, regardless there are choices to be made. Some choices require great thought, while others are made quickly. The hardest thing about making a choice is the affect it will have on us and others. An example of a difficult choice to make is upon seeing someone with no life in them. To look at that person everyday and see despair and absolute misery is one of the hardest things to do. This may be a friend, family member, companion, spouse, or even a complete stranger, but at some point in all of our lives we have seen someone with such a broken spirit and we wonder what to do for them.

Sometimes we are forced to make a decision for them and we don't want to, but the circumstances don't leave many options. This person may be bitter and angry, cold and distant, having a countenance of one that is empty showing no emotion. The choice made will be vital, if not for them, for yourself or both. Their future as well as yours may depend on the decision that has been put in your hands, simply because your the only one strong enough to make it and make it right. We cannot go through life making choices for everyone around us, no matter what we may think about a situation, but when we see one that is only alive from functioning organs we must decide if we can help them or not.
Usually there are reasons why some people are so empty, and most of the time they are never revealed. We spend so much time reaching for something to hold on to, something to make them feel better, or fulfill them, but nothing seems to work. We use all of our emotional resources hoping to see a glimpse of light in the darkness of despair, but the shadow is overwhelming. With all sincerity and care we try to connect and bring happiness to them, and with love we hold on to hope for them. Know that all of these efforts are not in vain. In life we all make choices, some good and some bad, and we learn from the bad one's while thriving on the good. We all desire happiness, not only for ourselves, but for those closest to us. When those one's are happy we rejoice with them, and when they are miserable we feel their misery, that is if we truly care.
