As a recruiter for staffing firms for over six years, many people enter the office with very little or zero understanding on how a firm like ours works. First of all, an employment firm should not be charging fees to the candidates. All fees are paid by the clients only. If a recruiter discusses with you terms and conditions of their services which includes any upfront monetary obligations, walk out the door. Majority of the staffing firms in the industry do not practice this policy anymore but is always safer to ask. When researching and determining agencies that are a right fit for your skills and qualifications, be prepared to have questions for the recruiter. Some questions to consider while conducting a pre-screening with a recruiter are:
1. How is the job market when it comes to my qualifications?
2. What current positions are open right now that fit my background? Temp or Perm?
3. Do you offer any computer training or certification programs?
4. What is the procedure to become registered with your firm?
5. What is the pay range for someone with my skills?
6. Where are most of your clients?
7. What type of clients do you work with?
Also, when considering utilizing an employment agency to assist with your job search, choose only a few. Not all agencies are alike and may not be able to find the right position for your qualifications and background. Do your research about the firm by reading their website or google them to see if any negative or positive experiences have been written about working with their recruiters.
Some other tips to help you with a staffing agency is communicate with the recruiters regarding your career objectives and what short term goals you would like to achieve. Whether you're seeking a permanent opportunity, project or temporary work, recruiters need to understand these goals in order to provide you with the right opportunities. Also, do not let the agencies you registered with do all the leg work for you. Continue to network on your own and send resumes to openings. An agency deals with hundreds of applicants a year and many fall at the waist side. However, if a recruiter stays in contact with you regarding opportunities, stay on top of them. Ask for feedback about interviews with their clients and any criticism that was conveyed to the recruiter. Take every interview as a learning experience and one step further to getting that job. And remember, do not rely only on recruiters, you need to put in the work as well when it comes to finding a position.
