To maximize your investment in your car requires you to displace the initial cost over time. The longer you have your vehicle, and the longer that it provides reliable service, the more value you get for your dollar.
In terms of resale, the value of a pre-owned vehicle is proportionate to its eye appeal, physical wear and tear, running condition, and soundness of structure.
There are definite strategies any car owner can take to assure the longevity of his vehicle and the maintenance of its serviceability.
It is universally agreed that the routine changing of motor oil and oil filter is a priority for maintaining the general health of a vehicle. Doing so every three to five thousand miles ensures that there is no build-up of harmful sludge or waste products within the motor to decrease performance or wear essential parts. An oil change is a simple and straight-forward procedure and can be done in the driveway with easy to use tools. There are some "tricks of the trade" that can be easily learned, and the more times it is done the easier it becomes. Of course, there are local garages that provide this service at reasonable cost, without appointments, and in short order. Depending on which way you go, the cost is between $20-40 for most cars, and a little more expensive for cars that use synthetic oils and more quarts.
All car dealerships offer and provide routine maintenance for the vehicles they sell and lease. It is good practice to take advantage of such service as it is an effective way of monitoring all other filters and fluids, tire pressure and tread wear, computer functions and read-outs, today's advanced electronics, and any of the closed systems that would provide no outward indication of developing problems. Agreed, dealerships often maintain hours that conflict with one's work schedule, or are located at a distance that is inconvenient. However, there are many local shops and garages run by reputable and talented mechanics that offer the same service, and often at reduced prices.
Rely upon family, friends, and neighbors to recommend a good local mechanic. A place within walking distance with weekend hours makes drop off and pick up more convenient. In addition, proximity provides the opportunity to develop a professional relationship with someone who wants and values you as a customer, knows the history of your vehicle, and finds a way to fit you in when something unexpected happens, or when there is an emergency.
Wash and wax your car often and by hand.
