Satire: Computers

Adventures With Candy

Ever since Experiencable Program Units were perfected during the middle of the 21st century, access to computer programs and networks became as easy as jacking into your computer and letting the machine do the rest. You entered a wonderland of possibilities. Too bad we didn't heed some of the warnings science fiction writers wrote about over a century ago. But then again, computers are our servants.

Tim had grown up on the computer, literally. He didn't know if his first memories had been his or created by the family computer. The border between reality and virtual existence was merging into a third realm of reality; virtuality. The programs seemed so real that the real world was continually seeming to become fake.

He turned 18 and was entitled, by law, to solo computer controlling. He had passed his controller tests and was now entitled, as an adult, to all the rights and privileges of a controller. The day his parents gave him the keys to his own EPU chamber was the day he finally felt free.

As he turned the key to open the top of his EPU chamber to use it for his first solo control session, memories of the first time he sneaked an unauthorized control of the computer came to mind. He remembered how he accidentally entered the wrong program he thought was for a candy store he wanted to experience. Instead it was a program that featured a prostitute called Candy Store. He tried to remember to enter exactly the right programs he wanted to experience after that. At least the first five minutes are free so that the mistake isn't on the permanent computer record of program access.

At least that is what his controller instructor taught him in class. But he had some suspicions that his dad may have known for some reason because whenever he mentioned he wanted to experience the candy store, his father would always accompany him. Maybe he had made the same "mistake" in the past.

The clear canopy top of the chamber opened silently like a metal and plastic clam opening its shell to allow prey to enter to be digested. Tim slid into the chamber atop the comfortable lounge and inserted the control key into the control panel in front of him. The projection of the head of a beautiful woman appeared in front of him as the canopy lowered into the locked position.

"Hi, Tim. Ready for your first solo control?"

"I wouldn't be in here if I wasn't," he said eagerly.

"Very good. Just lay back and enjoy the experience."

Tim settled into the lounge as the access leads
