Insurance premiums: Statistics favor women

by Rachelle de Bretagne

Created on: November 23, 2008

Statistics that favor women show that there are reasons why women are favored by Insurance companies as being a better risk. This article sets out to discuss the merits of the statistics and to demonstrate how worldwide, these statements are supported. For a European driver, the theory is that women drive more carefully and less often than their male counterparts, and savings can be made on Motor Insurance premiums based upon being a woman. When you look at the trend in other parts of the world, the statistics are not so clear-cut.

Frequency of driving.

In many countries the man will drive more miles than a woman, and is therefore by proportion likely to be in more accidents. Women tend to do a lot more town driving and thus are not exposed to fast motorway style driving on as regular a basis as men. They also appear to drive less long distances than men do, although the trend is changing.

Other facts which figure in the calculations.

What plays in the cost of Insurance premiums for both men and women is length of driving experience. You won't necessarily get cheaper insurance just because you are female, although statistics show that women live longer than men in many European countries, so chances are long term that a woman driver will benefit from cheaper premiums at some time within their lives.

Another things which plays in the price of insurance premiums is the driver's record. Whether a driver is male or female, if they have a record of contravention of the law, their premiums will be loaded. Statistics show that infringements of law over a period of time, measured that men actually have a much higher percentage than women overall and that women take notice of signs and respect the law of the road. Up to a 37 per cent difference was shown in studies carried out by Qualityplanning.com using the criteria of violations over a one year period.

Care with driving.

What studies do show worldwide is that women are more observant and perhaps it is their timidity of character which accounts for their reticence to break the law, making them a safer bet for Insurance companies to cover, resulting in the reward of lower premiums.
