Can you have Christmas without Christ

A Christmas without Christ would be nothing more than just another holiday. While December 25 was associated with many pagan rituals, the day was selected as a way to convert pagans to Christianity. It is likely that Christ was born somewhere between September and October. Scriptures state that, "there were shepherds abiding in the field". Historical records indicate that sheep, goats and other animals were brought indoors well before December. No matter what the date of Christ's birth, it is the message of love toward our fellow man that is most important at this time of year.

While gift giving, the Christmas tree, Santa Clause and all the other trappings that go along with commercialism attempts to create a false sense of harmony, one thing stands out. It's the spirit of the season that is more important than just giving gifts. It's a special time for bonding with friends and family as well as the stranger on the street.

We do need to remember that it was the example that Christ set on how to life in peace with yourself and your neighbors that is now exemplified in Christmas. It would, of course, be the greatest thing if we could project the Christmas spirit year round. But it is this particular season that falls in the dead of winter that gives us some hope and for a few days, at least, live in peace and harmony.

You don't need to be a Christian to celebrate Christmas since the basic message applies to everyone no matter what religion they belong to. In fact any major religion preaches the concept of peace, harmony and good will to all men. It's simply the greed and ego that gets in the way and Christmas reminds us to put away that ego for a few days.

Christmas can be celebrated simply. A tree decked with lights and glitter is certainly nice to have to create a friendly atmosphere. But it is not a necessity. It makes no difference what your station in life, where you live, whether you are rich or poor, you can enjoy this particular season without fear.

Christmas offers everyone the chance to focus on what's most important about life. It's not about acquiring wealth and fame. The commercialism that's wrapped around the weeks leading up to December 25 tends to pull our minds away from the true meaning of the season. The days rushing to buy gifts and attending parties adds a great deal of stress which is most evident when December 25 arrives. Many people simply can't unwind during the holidays. Shopping for gifts should be secondary to having a relaxed and friendly attitude toward family and friends and let go of the cares of the world. Want to give the best gift possible?

Take 10% from your gift buying budget and give it to charity or to someone who really needs help. You'll feel better knowing that your generosity is helping to bring hope to someone who has little.

It should be a time to reevaluate your priorities and should give you an incentive to make peace with your enemies and do something that improves the lives of those who are less fortunate. Imagine if everyone resolved to do something for someone else. Unfortunately, many people are too self-centered to see that any effort on their part can ultimately impact the world for better and lead to the kind of utopia that Christ himself envisioned.
