Let's face it, sticking to a healthy diet can be difficult at times. Especially when you are starving at the end of a busy day and even something like boiling brown rice seems to take an eternity. Having quick, healthy snacks is crucial for staying on track. A sensible snack can help stop the in-between meal munching and curb your hunger until your next meal so you will be less likely to overeat.
Opt for snacks that can be stored in the freezer. Freezing ensures foods stay fresh longer. And they will be ready to grab when you need them and are short on time.
Stock a variety of healthy snacking options to be sure to satisfy whatever you are craving.
If your sweet tooth is calling, try making mini juice pops by filling ice trays with 100% natural fruit juice. This will give you the feeling of a popsicle but also add antioxidants and vitamins found in fruits. And if you don't get around to eating them you can pop a few in a glass of iced tea for an added kick of flavor. For something a little creamier try filling the ice trays with yogurt.
Frozen grapes also make a quick and refreshing snack that is ready to grab and go.
If you are craving something more savory, a variety of frozen vegetables are always a great go-to snacking option. Steam your favorite in the microwave when you are short on time and sprinkle with parmesan cheese and a drizzle of olive oil for a little bit of healthy fat.
For those carb-o-holics, whole wheat pita bread is a good staple because it is lower in carbs than regular bread and packs a good serving of fiber. Grab a piece out of the freezer, and toast or microwave until thawed. Then top with shredded cheese - that can also be stored in the freezer - , peanut butter or any of your favorite spreads. Or slice open and fill with steamed veggie and a touch of low-fat cheese.
If what you're craving is simply just not "healthy", check your local grocer for fewer calorie brands of your favorite comfort foods. You may be surprised that you can find pizza, egg rolls and even mac and cheese. Having even just a small portion will satisfy your craving without packing on the pounds. And while these convenience foods are often higher in sodium, choosing them in smaller portions as a snack will reduce the salt.
Having our freezer armed with healthy snack options will make your healthy lifestyle a little easier. Even on those days that all you want to do is stand over the kitchen sink and devour a sleeve of saltine crackers.
