When you're on a diet your freezer can become your best friend. As the saying goes fresh is best, unprocessed, homemade foods will help you on your quest to drop a dress size. However, what happens when you have a craving or just a bad day? Well here are ten things you can keep in your freezer to help you when the munchies' attack and you just HAVE to eat something right now.
1. One of our favorite freezer treats is frozen grapes. It is amazing how the simple freezing of a fruit can change it's consistency, the inside of a frozen grape is really creamy. My daughter claims it's "..just like ice cream" I also find that by having frozen grapes I can portion control them easier, with normal' grapes I could sit down and eat a whole bunch, when they are frozen I am happy with just a couple as they seem to be more filling.
2. Another freezer snack is frozen ice blocks, you can make them yourself with fruit juices, iced teas and fruit or buy commercial ones. This is a great way of treating yourself without overloading on the calories. It helps me to avoid grabbing the ice cream container on a hot day.
3. Of course the classic ice-cream swap is frozen yogurt. I used to work in a shop that sold frozen yogurt cones and I loved working on Saturdays as we emptied the machine and got to take some home to pop in the freezer delicious! Just a tip, read the label and make sure that you chose a low-fat yogurt.
4. If you freeze watermelon then you can take it out and blitz it for a minute with a hand blender to have a delicious version of a granita. You need to make sure that it is still chunky, if you do over blitz it until smooth it will be more like a sorbet.
5. Frozen banana's are delicious, I first discovered these when my daughter was a baby. I was reading a parenting site which suggested frozen banana's for when they are teething of course I had to try them too! Just cut the banana's in half and put some lemon juice on them (to stop them going black) and freeze away.
6. When I'm on a diet and I have a bad day I love frozen diet meals. These may not be strictly treats' but they seem like it when you've been chasing deadlines all day and just want something to eat they certainly help to keep the takeaway bug' away.
7. Frozen vegetables can also make a nice treat when you feel like something more savory. Follow the directions on the packet for re-heating in the microwave and then stir through some hummus for a delicious, nutritious and diet-friendly snack.
8. Frozen spinach is also a great snack food to have in your freezer no I'm not suggesting you eat the spinach on it's own a la Popeye.' Pop the spinach into the microwave and follow the packet's direction for cooking then stir it into a tub of lite cream cheese. This makes a great dip to use with raw veggies.
9. The diet company, Weight Watchers also have a range of frozen treats readily available which are just great to taste I love their ice cream! You feel like you are being really naughty, but in fact they are low calorie and you aren't breaking your diet.
10. If you read your labels you will find that there are a number of low calorie treats available on the market from Fudgsicles to Haagen-Dazs Yogurt Bars.
Hopefully this list will help you stay on track with your dieting goals.
