You've got something to offer. All you have to do is let the world know about it. Now, it's time to design your own website.
Building a website is fairly easy. There are plenty of websites already out there, designed expressly for the purpose of allowing you to build and design your own website, easily and quickly. There are also too many web sources to count, which will help you learn on your own, or school you on the more advanced techniques of producing a website from scratch.
No matter what methods you choose, start with the basic and
proven formats. A basic format allows you to build and design your own website quickly. As time goes on, you'll also be able to see what works and make adjustments on a solid foundation, which continues to be productive.
Make the content compelling. Customers have no reason to visit or return to a site just because it operates perfectly and smoothly. So, keep it interesting or make it do something. Don't rob content or plagiarize from other websites. All writing, music, pictures, and other such things should be located on your server. At the same time, links to other websites are a must. Describe what the links are and give credit for them to the original sites. Periodically, test and remove links. You want visitors to find information, not dead-end at inactive sites. You don't even need permission to link to other sites. Why bog down a webmaster's emails asking, "Please, may I?" when it's a given that webmasters want traffic driven to their site?
Organize your website. You will quickly decide on your content. The trick is to make your site easy to use, while making it work. Minimize unnecessary fluff and keep it rich with content. This means don't try to get too tricky. Minimize distractions. Too many ads deter visitors. Too many blinking or animated objects tend to make visitors focus on the wrong things and waste their attention, when it could otherwise be doing something of value. Automatic sounds and pop-ups are just plain annoying and come off as amateur. Large background images are just a huge no-no, since they rarely accomplish more than a slow page load and drag down the entire process.
Design your own website to be clean and precise. General content shouldn't take more than 1-2 screens to display, but articles might take several screen scrolls. If your site colors outside of these lines, you're probably cramming too much content together. Spread it out among other pages of your website. Beware of capitalized words, extremely large fonts, and gratuitous exclamation marks, as readers often perceive them as just trying too hard. Contrasting colors for text on the page is very effective for giving a fresh or appealing appearance and a little extra space between lines of test lets a page breathe a bit. The main thing to keep in mind is to offer something valuable and easy to use.
