Most of us recognize numbers as a means of measuring, counting and quantifying our lives. These symbols are intimately weaved into the fabric of our daily lives and rarely seen as holding anything more than the information we want at the moment ~ from weighing yourself and seeing that 2 lb loss or gain, to booking your vacation flight at 20% off.

Numbers tell us something about ourselves and our world. But is what we see daily the whole story or is there more to this system of counting and calculating? Numerology says there is more, and that the more can best be expressed by translating the language which uses letters and words to the language of math, using numbers and zeros.

Its history is ancient and its use is recorded in almost every culture. There are a few accepted systems with Kabbalah, Chaldean and Pythagorean the most widely used today. The Chaldean method is the most popular and very easy to grasp using the Roman alphabet as the tool for translating letters into numbers and the single digit number scale, 1-9, for the numerical values. It's much simpler than it sounds ~ the alphabet has 26 letters, A-Z. The number scale used is 1-9. Each letter takes it number value based on its place in the alphabet, meaning A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on.

You will find charts depicting this on many numerology sites. The key elements that are considered in a numerological reading are your birth name and your birth date. Your name gives you your Destiny Number, the vowels in your name give you your Soul Urge number, and your birth date gives you your Life Path. You can think of it as presenting a map for your personal journey in life so that you can see the hills, valleys, possible obstacles, even the weather conditions. Seeing these patterns can help you in developing your strengths to their full potential and noticing where you may have challenges or weaknesses.

Here is how translating a name to a numeric value looks. For this example let's use Mary Sue Jones as the birth certificate name. M= 4, A = 1, R= 9, Y = 7, S=1, U=3, E=5, J=1, O=6, N=5, E=5, S=1. Now you can look at just the number values for the name, which becomes 419713516551. That is the name translated into numerical values. We add these values and reduce them until we have a single digit number. You can add the numbers completely, which results in 156, and then reduce that number by adding 1+5+6, which is 12, and then add 1+2, for the Destiny Number 3.
