Yes you should first love God for who He is, but in that same breath understand that He is a jealous God. He wants you for who you are nothing more. He is a loving God but do not undersestimate his ability to be also quick to wrath. He is merciful and will give you a million chances. He warns so many of what will happen and they do not listen. There has to be a point of reasoning and consequence. By fearing God, you also respect Him at the same time. By fearing Him, you will not go over a certain point and hold a certain sense of respect for him. For example, let us look at the real world for a second. A parent and child, the parent does not instill fear into his children, but the child still knows when not to go too far. Look at someone who cusses all the time everywhere he or she goes. When they get around a group of elderly women that same person will refrain from cussing out of respect for his elders. I think that is the same with God, it is a matter of respect. People hold one day of the week as sabboth out of respect and do not do more than they are supposed to do. When you have a relationship with God, you know what is expected of you. You are convicted in the spirit if you do something that is spiritually wrong.
If you are out with your friend and you see her stealing a sweater from the rack and she leaves you to conceal it. Immediately you should feel uncomfortable and want to get out of there. She has committed not only a sin but something that is against the law. Things like that should be a direct indication of what God is saying to you and what He wants you to do. It is not difficult to be convicted by God especially when you might be thinking something that is inappropriate at the time. Feeling guilty about something can indicate or at least it should that you were wrong. There are a small amount of people out there that are never guilty or feel shame for anything they do. They must have not a working relationship with God because no one on earth bears the resemblance of perfect. We all mess up and we all sin every day. But through that we must realize that God is forgiving and wise. He knows what we are going to do before we do them and we must recognize our mistakes. Ignoring them will not help you with Him nor will it make you a better person. Nor does just being a good person help. We have a mission here in this world while we are permitted to be here and if we do not complete it then our works will mean nothing to Him.
