You don't have to retire if you want to continue to work. There are a number of options open to you to continue working in your own field, and continue to enjoy your life. Too often people feel that they have to retire when they reach a certain age, be it 62, 65, or 70, but with people living longer today, and the medical help available, and many people keeping themselves in shape, there is no set age to retire. Let's review a few ideas to help you continue to work past the normal retirement age, and live the life you want.
l). Start a homebased consulting business in your specialty, let's say you are a financial advisor, helping people save for their retirements, and making sure they have sufficient money, so they can retire without a worry, and put that money into financial instruments which stay safe for decade after decade. This business is needed today, many people are worrying themselves sick thinking about what has happpened to their 40l(k) plans, and other retirement plans; they worked hard and now have lost over 50-60% of their portfolios. Your business knowledge can help them set up the best plan for them.
2). Tell your current boss what you enjoy about your job, and you would like to stay on after age 65. Inform her that you feel that you are too young, you love your job, and want to stay as part of the team at the Jones Company, and continue your job in the future. Many times companies are only too happy to keep on loyal, productive, good team players, company and profit oriented employees beyond the normal retirement age.
3). Ask your boss if you can continue to work for your organization in the capacity as a consultant to the manager of your accounting department. Your duties will be similar to many of the acitivities that you did so well as the assistant treasurer of your company. Now you would work your own hours, and as long as you got the duties completed, that you agreed upon, you might only have to go in for a few hours a day, 3-4 days a week, or everyday, for a few hours, based on what you want. This situation would also mesh exactly for the person who wanted to start a consulting practice at home; this would be your first client in the business. There are many options to stay working, being productive, using your skills, and continue working with your associates, and making a paycheck each week, while enjoying what you love to do. Go for it.
