Eat healthy, live longer

Did you realize there are foods that actually boost your immune system and help you to live longer? It's no secret that "we are what we eat," but knowing exactly what foods trigger a healthy immune response is the key to a long life. Foods that encourage that process should be the first ones in your shopping cart, so here are a few to help you get started.

Blueberries

These little "nuggets of blue" get the most votes as far as developing a healthy immune system which is vital to warding off disease and staying healthy. Blueberries are a powerhouse of antioxidants which are an excellent source of vitamins C and E. Both of these vitamins guard the body against free radicals, which are essential to keeping the body healthy and disease free.

"Brassica" Vegetables

Your mother was right when she said, "Eat your broccoli; it's good for you." Vegetables such as kale, collards, mustard greens, cabbage, cauliflower, and "yes," even broccoli are the new line of potent anti-cancer fighting veggies that help promote a healthy immune system. Preparing vegetable lasagna once a week with this healthy concoction of veggies is the perfect ticket to living longer. Just be sure to leave out the extra cheese!

Shiitake Mushrooms

The Chinese have known for years the powerful medicinal properties of the shiitake mushroom, but we're now just catching on. Researchers have discovered that the shiitake mushroom produces killer white blood cells that destroy infected cells. And because of its unique complex of "sugars," it boosts the immune system into a higher gear. With these protective properties, shiitake mushrooms should be the first thing on your grocery list.

Garlic

You don't have to wear a rope of garlic around your neck to enjoy the medicinal properties of this powerful "gem" of nature; you just need to eat it raw or cooked. The pungent odor of garlic keeps most of us from enjoying its healthy benefits, but don't let that stop you. Garlic contains allicin which inhibits the growth of bacteria and kills germs.

Green Tea and Black Tea

Controversy has been waging as to which contains the most health benefits. They are both powerful beverages in staying healthy. Green tea contains the highest number of nutrients, but both teas contain polyphenols which are responsible for eliminating free radicals in our body.

Spinach

Did you realize that researchers have identified approximately 13 antioxidant compounds in spinach? Your mother was right, "Eat your spinach." This powerhouse food is loaded with essential nutrients and vitamins, including folate which is important in producing new cells. It takes about three cups per week for an adult to enjoy all its healthy benefits.

Yogurt

The food with the "good" bacteria is one that will keep your intestinal tract healthy and decrease the acidity of in the colon which allows for more mineral absorption. A balance needs to be maintained in the intestines for optimal health and yogurt prevents bad bacteria from forming. It also aids the body in forming white blood cells which fight infection.

Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, staying away from processed food, alcohol, and refined sugar is the best way to live a long and healthy life. Here's to your longevity!
