Reflections: Meeting God for the first time

My Perspective on His-Story:

In 1975, Gerald Ford was President, Microsoft was founded, and Muhammad Ali fought Joe Frazier in the "Thriller in Manila", and of all these things, I was blissfully unaware. Being only six years of age, I was more concerned that my classmates in Kindergarten were learning how to "skip" and I was having trouble with it. When I asked my mother about what I should do, she responded, "Why don't you talk to Jesus about it?" It made sense to me because I knew that Jesus loved me and prayed to him regularly with my parents since I was born. As only a child could, I knelt at the side of my bed, folded my tiny fingers, and said something like, "Jesus, mommy said I should talk to you about this. The other kids seem to know how to skip and I can't do it. Please help me to learn how to do it. In Jesus name we pray, Amen." That night I had a very vivid dream that I can still remember parts of. I dreamed that Jesus came to me and with a smile and said, "Here, take my hand". I put my little hand in his and he began to hop, then step. Hop, then step. He said, "Come on now. Do it with me." I began to hop then step, hop then step. "Hey! I'm GETTING IT!" I exclaimed! We skipped and skipped. When I awoke, I ran in to see my mother and showed her what I could do. I'm sure she asked me how I learned to do it and I said, "Jesus taught me how to skip!"

As an adult, I reflect on that story and have my own questions. What did Jesus' face look like? How did my small steps keep up with his longer steps? Was that really a visitation or simply the imagination of a small child at work? All I can say for sure is, that it happened.
This little boy continued to be curious about spiritual things and asked questions like, "Grandpa, will there be cars in heaven?" He would respond with some great theological answer about time and space and spirits able to move at the speed of thought. To which I would reply, "Oh, then what are the streets of gold' for?"
Vacation Bible School that summer was the turning point in my life. It was there that I learned about sin. Sin is what God calls it when I behave bad. If I ignore my mother's call, if I break something and try to hide the results, if I play with something I was told not too, these are all sins. Jesus is God's Son and He lives in Heaven today where everything is perfect and there is no sin at all. If I were to be in an accident and die I could not go to heaven because of sin (Romans 6:23). But Jesus has a gift for me (John
