the same. When tipping, remember that the monthly income for most workers in basic jobs can be as little as 100 dollars a month so they should be happy with a moderate sum.
For a day tour it is better to hire a taxi and tell the driver what you want to see. About 6 or 7 hours will cost about 50 dollars and you can control how long you spend at each location. Negotiate a fixed price in advance. Include the tiered rice fields in your programme and of course the Mother Temple. There are many temples but this is the one not to be missed. The Besakih Restaurant near the temple, however, should be avoided at all costs... This was by far the worst I have come across in many years of world travelling! Most unlike normal Bali offerings. The volcano involves a longer drive but is also worth seeing.
The area that you choose to live in depends on what you are looking for. My preference is Sanur and the Mercure Hotel there was good, with a nice beach and garden, all for a fair price. Kuta is for young people who want to party all night and sleep all day. Nusa Dua has higher class fairly expensive hotels and modern shopping facilities but in my opinion better value and a truer holiday atmosphere can be found elsewhere.
For services avoid the main tourist areas. I had a haircut with shampoo, head massage and beard trim followed by a one hour intensive body massage for a total cost of six dollars! A small private laundry charged me one dollar to wash and press 2 pairs of trousers and 3 shirts!
Some of Bali's charm and attractions are still there waiting for you. Have a great holiday and experience something different!
