As well as it being an enjoyable way of improving spelling, there is an opportunity to flex and improve your child's mathematical skills, regarding the score system. Encourage them to add up their own scores at the end of each round and encourage one of them to be score-keeper. It is a fun way to awake and stimulate your child's intellect, however there should always be a dictionary kept close at hand for from experience Scrabble tends to bring out the worst in players. Desperate players will try anything to get rid of the undesirable high score letters, making up words. Warning: any suspect word should be checked immediately. This game usually results in lively and heated discussions and is a great bonding activity for families.

The game of knowledge was played constantly in my household when I was growing up. It is a solar system game; the players start at Earth and travel through the orbits of the planets, finally past Pluto and into the next galaxy. There are general knowledge questions to be answered randomly as you go on your way and a question must be answered correctly at each planet in order to continue on to the next orbit. Each planet has been assigned a specific topic; i.e. sports, nature, television, English language. There are two sets of questions one each card, one for the children and one for adults, which grow harder as the game progresses. It is a time consuming game, however it is an extremely educational one and great fun for the family. Both parents and children's intelligence is tested as they battle against each other in this game of knowledge.
