How to tell your boss that you are pregnant

Good question, I guess it depends on your boss. Some bosses can be pretty insensitive about that kind of thing, so it could be fairly difficult. Taking that into consideration, the best thing to do, would be to look at this from two different perspectives.
1) Your boss is an inconsiderate Jerk:
Write a formal letter requesting a leave of absense for the given period of time that you wish to take your maternity leave, with the date that you wish to start. Don't put any feelings into your letter, make it as proffesional as possible. Include all the details that he/she would need to know such that they have no means to fire you on grounds that you left anything out. Request approval for leave of absence as of a certain day, or threaten legal action. Sign the letter, and put it in an envelope for your boss.
2) Your boss is an understanding normal human being:
Ask if they have a minute to talk privately. Make it as comfortable for you as possible, try not to be nervous, this should be something that your excited about. Tell your boss that you're expecting and what your plans are as far as working and taking leave. Ask as many questions as possible and make sure you know all you need to know, and that they know all the information they need to know about your pregnancy. Also, keep them informed as your pregnancy goes along of any medical concerns that come up that might hinder your work performance. Enjoy the moment!
