What to do if your pet snake bites

First of all, poisonous snakes live on some other planet. There is no such animal on planet earth. Of the 2.500 species and sub-species of snake alive today about 400 are VENOMOUS, none are poisonous, there is a big difference. Poison you ingest such as in a drink, venom is injected into the body by items such as a hypodermic needle or by a "snakes fangs"!  For over 38 years I have been pounding this into students heads and I go berserk when I see it in print.

Now for removing a snake from any part of your anatomy, it is really very simple. There are three basic steps anyone can use. First: If you are the victim of a large boiad ( python or boa ) find its tail and bend it back wards, the pain will immediately cause the snake to release its grip. This will also work if it has coiled around you without biting.

Second: get to the kitchen or bath room and run very warm water over the snakes head, NOT scalding hot but very warm, within 30 seconds the snake will release its grip.

Third: Bourbon, scotch, vodka and if none of the above are available use mouthwash. pour a very small amount along the snakes mouth line and within 1/2 second it will release. ""DO NOT EVER USE RUBBING ALCOHOL! this will kill the snake.

I have been working with snakes for well over half my life and I can tell you snakes have moods, just like people! Snakes have headaches, tooth aches, and so on. Look at your snake's eyes, they say a lot. If the eyes are squinting, and the tongue is not flicking, the snake does not want to mess around, leave it alone. A flicking tongue and wide eyes are both signals that the snake is active and depending upon the species is not likely to nip you.

If you feed your pet thawed or live prey, wash your hands! If a snake is in a feeding mode and you stick your mouse smelling paws into its enclosure, what do you think it is going to do? It is going to latch on and try to swallow. Snakes are APEX predators and they are at the top of the food chain, they are very smart and strong. Remember several of the little cute snakes you see in pet shops, grow up to be big, not so cute and constantly hungry predators. Know what you are getting yourself into before you bring it home.

As for not knowing if your snake is venomous or not? well if you don't know that, get rid of the snake and buy a poodle. You have to remember that snakes are living, breathing entities. They feel pain, they get cold, sick, lonely. They have needs just like all of God's creatures.
