Turn chores into a game! Here are the top three games I play with myself to get motivated to clean.
#1 WHICH CHORE WILL I CHOOSE? I take all the chores that need to be done such as mopping the kitchen and bathroom floor, vacuuming the living room and dusting the bedrooms, and write each task to be done on a small sheet of paper. Each paper gets folded and placed in a bowl. I mix up the papers really well, and then I reach in and pick one out. That's the chore I have to do first. This is so helpful when you have chores that you just hate to do and put off. It gets fun seeing which chore you will choose next. This game also works really well with getting your kids to help you clean. They can't complain about the chore they have to do because they choose it!
#2 BEAT THE TIMER To motivate myself to really work hard and fast, I estimate how long it will take to finish a cleaning task. Then I set my timer and try to beat that time. I'll sometimes record my time on a task and then try to beat it the next time.
#3 FIVE MINUTE ROOMS Think about the occasions when you only have a little bit of time to clean or straighten. You often finish one room really well, run out of time and have to leave the other rooms in total chaos. This game helps you get the highest priority cleaning/straightening tasks done in each room. I set a timer for five minutes and clean like mad in one room. Then when the timer goes off, it's on to the next room for five minutes. I keep doing this rotation around the rooms until all the cleaning is done or I run out of time. This game is also perfect if you have a hard time concentrating on one thing at a time.
