Jailhouse Moon
In the evening of blue
the moon's yellow glow
bathes and caresses
the buildings below.
It's summer- the sky
as seen through these bars
canopies earth
with its mantle of stars.
Though bound by these chains
in the dark I despise
moon beauty still moves me
brings tears to my eyes.
For this moon is a gift
meant to sweeten the night
there to chase away shadows
with its soft golden light.
And in this pale kingdom
in my mind, I walk free
unhindered, unfettered
like I wish I could be.
