On the stair, a velvet eyed angel waits
With others, for love, perhaps she waits for me
My name, my love, is not known to her, yet
I've seen her before, watched her, wanted her
Pondered the possibilities, knowing
My chance, our time, our destiny, will come
She glances my way, I wonder of things
The future, our future, of rings and kids
I'm ahead of myself, I've fallen deep
For this flaxen haired beauty, smitten
She holds my heart in a tenuous grasp
Unaware of the stakes, my tender soul
Evening becomes night, the witching hour
forces my hand, I feel bolder, stronger
She passes me, smiles, opportunity
Beckons with its glimpse of fulfilment
Confused thoughts of my inadequacy
Stifle me, cloud my mind, awkward request
"Are you free, Friday?" I stammer, clammy
Heart racing, my moment of truth, I wait
As time stills, eternity's vast chasm
To leap across or plunge over, anxious
She pauses, thinks, perfect O of her mouth
Speaks, "You're joking. No way", turns away, leaves
I'm shattered, lost for words, as sorrow seeps
Into my heart, hopes and dreams discarded
Our future erased. "Why are you so cruel?"
I watch you keep walking, no glimpse behind
Your friends do, they laugh, love ridiculed
Serpentine princess, an angel no more
