Database applications are probably the most widely developed and used application throughout the world. Applications are developed to enter data, store data and retrieve data. Software professionals deal with some kind of data in their daily work life. There are various career options one can chose in the field of database. The roles can vary from Database Programmers to database analysts to database administrators. Here are some common tips for starting a career in databases

Develop a love for data In order to be a successful database professional, one MUST develop a love towards data. For techies, data is only a set of tables and columns, but for the end users it is their valuable asset. Accuracy of the data is the most crucial element for success of any database application. There will hardly be a day in the life of a database professional when he or she would not need to deal with the accuracy of data. A technical person who understands the data is well respected within the organization. Sooner you realize that is better for a successful career in database.
Sharpen your SQL skills No matter what database platform is used, SQL is one common language that is used to retrieve the data from the databases. In order to be a successful database professional, it is imperative that your SQL skills are solid. A database professional without strong SQL skills cannot go very far in the long run.Learn and understand the database internals Whether you are a DBA (database administrator) or not, it will always help if you understand the database internals and how databases interact with the system components i.e. memory, storage, CPU. This will eventually help you design better database applications.
Understand the front end data-entry applications Whether you are involved in the database front-end application development or not, it always helps if you understand how the users are entering the data that is being used throughout the enterprise. It also helps in understanding the data entry patterns and usage of the attributes.Learn about data security As explained earlier, data is a valuable asset for an organization.
Like any other valuable asset, security is also very important for the data. Organizations could lose millions of dollars and customer confidence if the data security is violated. Whether or not you are directly involved in the data security, it is key that you understand the security features such as groups, roles and privileges and how they have been implemented.
