Writing exciting research papers

by Lorraine Nyc

Created on: November 20, 2008

If you want to write an exciting research paper then you have to make it stand out. I cannot imagine how many research papers teachers must read. It would be worth the effort to make your research paper not only informative but entertaining as well. Any type of paper that's going to be entertaining must take the reader on a journey. Just because it's a research paper doesn't mean it has to be boring.

The very first thing to do is to make sure you choose a subject that interests you. Now, your job as a writer is to make it interest the reader as well. It's very difficult to write about something that bores you. So, even if the main topic is not your interest, approach it from an angle that does interest you. For instance, if your paper is based on the theme "guitars". you have no interest in guitars but you do have an interest in history. Write your paper about the history of the guitar or it's effect on history.

If your paper is on the life of someone, an event or the creation of something, don't just lay out the facts. Turn it into a tale of sorts. Make it interesting. Every paper must have a beginning and an end. Make your beginning capture the reader's attention. Make your end one that will leave them feeling educated and entertained for having read it.

Once you have your topic picked, the next most important thing to do is to forget about formatting and grammar. Don't worry, it's only temporary. Write what you have to say. Just write. Just sit down after having developed your interest and write your thoughts. Begin with an idea and form a conclusion. Write about how you got from one point to the next. The more you enjoy the actual act of writing, the more the written word will just flow with it's own life.

Go back and reread what you wrote. Make sure you have all the elements in the paper that you wanted there. Check to see that the paper follows a sequence of events. One idea should prompt the next. Double check for descriptive phrases. You have to reel the reader in by giving them a sense of being there.

Now you can format your paper, making sure to follow the procedures of the style you are writing in. Double check to make sure all references are inserted correctly. Check punctuation, grammar and spelling. Remember that the paper must flow. Believe it or not, typos and grammatical errors can make the entire paper lose it's flare. I've put many articles and such down because it irritated me to see so many grammatical errors. Create your reference page and/or bibliography.

Of course, once it is all formatted and put together, go over everything again to be sure that soemthing was not overlooked. Turn the paper in with a smile and wait for your "A".
