Reflections: Creativity

by Michael Kryton

Created on: November 19, 2008

If we have ever had a universal model to define humanity, it is the image in which we were created, regardless of which school of thought or faith we subscribe to in order to understand or accept it. Creativity is inherent in who we are. As babies, we experience life without judgement. If anything, basic needs drive our instincts, which define the necessity to create solutions.

The moment we cry, we connect to the concept of response; the moment we stand up, we eventually connect the experience to the function of walking. Given the point in the learning curve of life we find ourselves at any of these points, these revelations can be considered creativity at the highest level. Indeed, if we continued to experience life at this level throughout our lives, we would generate genius every other day.

Someone once said to me that we create every instant of reality by willing it to be so. Well, something is at work sustaining reality. Perhaps it might be the collective energy of will in all living things driven by the need to survive. Reality is invoked within an instant, although we view it from the perspective of a curve, which embraces past, present and future. So we speculate on infinity and have trouble grasping the concept that there is no beginning or end. What is, always is. Or is it? According to a notoriously mystical character by the name of Seth, the secret to understanding these kinds of things is reflected in the question, "How do you explain time to someone who has to take the time to understand it?"

What we understand, we choose to understand based on what we choose to learn and accept. In fact, we create our situations through choices as well as inspiration, curiosity, and courage. Inspiration is pervasive and comes from many sources. Curiosity fuels our passion for knowledge, imagination and the quest to understand the purpose of life. The choices we make, often with courage, lead us forward. The results may not be what we expect, but then we adapt, creatively. Experience is the evidence of all of these things. Evidence surrounds and informs us about every aspect of life - and beyond (if metaphysics is your thing).

The secret to creativity may someday be uncovered in the genome. Or, we may discover that creativity is something outside of any physical paradigm we currently understand. Its origins may reside somewhere else, perhaps in the context of what many refer to as "the soul".

Ultimately, creativity is a gift. Whether or not we are able to identify the gift giver is hard to say, but the quest to do so will forever peak our curiosity and, by implication, motivate our creativity. Perhaps that is what the giver intended. And how creative that truly is, wouldn't you say?
