Most definitely, parents have the power and I believe it is their duty to end hereditary religion. Many won't do so because they don't believe it's "hereditary" but believe that's the way "God would have it." They believe by teaching their children exactly what they were taught about religion, about worship, and everything else related to their religious beliefs, they are doing their child a favor. Nothing could be further from the truth.
You are teaching your child about Religion, not spirituality. Therefore, the obvious flaws in your religion will be passed down from generation to generation and it turns into a generational curse more than anything else. Blind faith and illogical religious concepts go unchallenged by you and your children. Any challenges are labeled as devil-worship. How absurd is this? Under the guise of "saving your child's soul" you are actually doing way more harm than good. You are creating a situation where the truth for your offspring will not be revealed in their lifetime.
As mentioned in the documentary Zeitgeist, the major religion, Christianity is nothing more than a Roman Story passed down through millennia; adjusted from time to time to fit in with a particular society. The Roman Story that became Christianity was forced on people through the horrors of the Inquisition and is still forced upon people today. Even the US presidential candidates have to say they are Christian or they can kiss the nomination GOOD-BYE. If Christianity is not a strong form of mind and social control, I don't know what is.
"Holier than thou" people, don't worry, I'm not going to HELL because it was created by man for control. It was created to scare people into attending the huge Cathedrals that were built 2-3 millennia ago. The religious leaders of the day were not making money. The "High Priest", "Bishops", Emperors, needed to find a way to get people to come, so Hell was created. Scare the crap out of people and tie the fear to an eternal damnation and what do you get? Cathedrals filled to the brim, just like today.
Research the Council of Nicaea, 325ad in Rome, headed by Emperor Constantine. During this meeting the politically motivated Christian doctrines were established. This is also when Jesus became a historical figure for political and social control. Constantine himself was a "Sun Worshipper" and actually baptized on his deathbed and against his wishes. The Council of Nicaea started a long history of Christian bloodshed and spiritual fraud.
