Would legalized dueling be a benefit to modern societies?

No, legalized dueling would be detrimental to modern societies, as it would destablize and undermine the social peace that serves as the foundation of modern society. Some may claim that legalized dueling would foster greater freedom of choice for individuals to decide their own fates. While this argument may have some theoretical merit, in practice it is worthless.

How would society monitor and regulate these legalized duels? Such regulation would create bureacracy and its attendant costs. There are alot better ways for the state to spend its money other than regulating its citizens' slaughter of one another.

More importantly, how would a legal duel be differentiated from illegal murder? Consent would become a legal defense to the charge of murder. Logistically, this added defense would cripple the state's ability to prosecute murderers. The state would have to spend more resources gathering information necessary to refute a defendant's claim that the killing was justified on the grounds of consent.

Legalizing dueling would erode social mores against private violence, create social disorder, and destabilize modern society itself. Ultimately, those who support the legalization of dueling have become spoiled by the benefits of a stable and peaceful society that limits the exercise of legitimate violence to the role of the state.
