Poetry: Death of a parent

by Catherine Morris

Created on: November 19, 2008   Last Updated: November 22, 2008

Gone from our home but not from our hearts

Dearly loved husband, father and grandfather

Though I know that others feel your passing too

I feel, at times, I am alone in my suffering

Robbed of your constancy and steadfastness

Your shoulder to cry on

Your wise words

Your tower of strength

Eighty-seven years existence

Still gone too soon

Seemed like you'd live forever

'til the end came

A man of few words

Stubborn and proud

Hard-working and honest

An empty chasm has been left behind

You had no chance to hold your grandchild

To push her on the swing

But we will teach her of you

Never from our mind

Despite your absence of physical presence

So special, so precious, so loved

A gap which can't be filled

We are lucky to have known you

As man, as dad, as friend.
