Visiting Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada is rich not only is beauty but in history also. Beginning in Fort Erie after crossing the Peace Bridge begin your journey at the Fort which was built by the British prior to the American Revolution. Then continue toward Niagara Falls going through several small towns such as Oshua. Niagara Falls with all of its splendor is a sight to behold it is on the Canadian side of the falls that the true panoramic view is seen. Be sure to stay late into the evening to enjoy the colored lights that are shown on the horseshoe falls usually beginning around 9pm. It is a sight most visitors remember because of the beauty of the mist and the colors.

Niagara Falls offers the Maid of the Mist Boat rides which takes the visitor to within roughly of about 100 feet of the horseshoe falls. The legend of the Maid of the Mist is both beautiful and sorrowful. The most beautiful Indian Maiden was chosen to sacrifice for a bountiful harvest, she was then put in a canoe full of items such as squash and pumpkins, set adrift over the falls. On a clear day if you look very closely you may see her face in the mist. The boat ride is great fun each passenger is outfitted with a rain coat, be sure to use it because other wise as the boat turns you could get rather wet from the mist. On a summer day it surely feels wonderful.

Clinton Hill is a terrific tourist trap from Ripley's Believe It or Not to Madame Tussuad's Wax Museum where you may see Cher and Cleopatra. Madame Tussuad's also has a chamber of horrors featuring the beheading of Marie Antoinette. It is worth a visit. There are all sorts of souvenir shops where you can purchase anything from English Tea Pots, cups and saucers to Whinnie the Pooh.

Moving along the next stop is the Spanish Aero Car which is a cable car going from the Canadian side to the American side and back. It goes over the rapids area, the view is spectacular but is not for the faint of heart. The ride last about one hour and is worth every penny.

Once past the rapids the Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario on the American side is Old Fort Niagara, in Youngstown New York. No visit is complete without going there. Old Fort Niagara is the only fort on the North American continent that had three separate countries build and add to it. The French were the first to begin construction, they built the only French castle on the continent. The British then added more to the fort finally the Americans captured the fort. It is worth taking the time to explore this old fort the view from the ramparts is great especially in the early morning when there are small water craft on Lake Ontario.

Niagara Falls no matter which side you happen to visit is worth seeing. The American side is more commercial, the Canadian side is geared more for the tourist. Enjoy the beauty of Niagara Falls once in your lifetime it is well worth it.
