Poetry: Pets

My dog sleeps soundly at my feet.

He seems so happy and complete

but before he came into our home

he was neglected and left to roam.

A sad and sorry little lad,

hungry, dirty and treat so bad.

Thin, and finally left for dead,

what thoughts went through his little head.

He must have wondered what he'd done

to be so hated by anyone,

but as we all already know

he had done nothing except grow.

So, when his puppy days were done,

this beautiful dog found his home was gone.

Thrown out into the cold dark street

he wandered for days with tired sore feet.

Just in time a samaritan came

and gave him shelter from the rain.

Still, this shelter was not a home,

he needed a family of his own.

When we first met he was still quite scared

of anything that he saw or heard,

but that has changed now he's full of fun,

big and brave and scared of no-one.

He snuggles deeper at my feet,

snug and warm I can feel his heat.

One thing now I know for sure

he's safe and sound for evermore.
