Hair style trend: The Posh Bob

Sometimes known as the "pob", the posh bob is a classic cut that regained the style spotlight after being recently sported by Brittain's Victoria "Posh" Beckham, a.k.a. Posh Spice, of Spice Girl fame. Posh Beckham's famous style is based on the classic bob cut which originated in the early 1900s and gained wide popularity in the 1920s. Since its creation, the bob cut has been embraced by women and young girls around the world.

There are many varieties of bob haircuts. In the 1920s, the bob cut was a symbol associated with liberated women. Flappers wore very short styles often with shaved napes. This was sometimes called the shingle bob or graduated bob, and is the basis of today's posh bob.

The difference between the posh bob and the traditional graduated or shingle bob is in the length of the hair at the front of the cut (closest to the face). In the posh bob, hair is severely angled from a high shaved nape down to a center-parted front that falls just below the chin. It is also cut in asymetrical lengths, giving it a fresh, edgy look.

Traditionally, the lengths of bobs fall between the ears and chin. Longer graduated bobs, like the posh bob, are more dramatic cuts. Adding striking highlights amps up the style. While long graduated bobs have been around for some time, Victoria Beckham's flair for style helped bring the look greater fame.

Victoria Beckham is not the first celebrity to reinvent a classic haircut, nor is she the first to have her name lent to the cut. In the 1990s, two celebrities brought classic styles new popularity. George Clooney wore a Caesar cut while starring on the popular TV show ER, and the cut was often called the Clooney cut. Jennifer Aniston's long shag was widely popular amoung women and became known as "The Rachel" after her character on the TV show Friends.

Different hairstyles suit particular face types. Before getting a posh bob, try the style out virtually. There are many digital makeovers available online, including Lifetime TV's Total Beauty Makeover. Upload a picture and try on a variety of celebrity hairstyles, including Victoria Beckham's posh bob.

Good stylists are familiar with popular hair trends and can tell which styles will look best on a particular person. When getting the posh bob, bring pictures and talk to the stylist about whether the cut seems to be a good fit. Some minor modifications may make all the difference in how well the style works for you.
