Trunk fishing is a fun and mysterious way to earn a little gold on the side in World of Warcraft. Fishing itself is a secondary profession along with first aid and cooking. This means it will not take up a profession slot, of which you only have room for two. Everybody has the ability to fish. However not everybody has the patience. And that is required. Skill points are not as easy to obtain as they as in other professions. But fishing has many benefits. Including the relaxation provided. Also, fishing is a must if you're looking to level your cooking, and it also assists in many other tradeskills including alchemy.
The swirling pools found on coast lines throughout the game can hold a variety of fish but the best pools are the floating wreckages, debris and flotsam. These contain boxes of different varieties that can contain a multitude of interesting finds from potions to tradeskill material like leather and cloth. Like all fishing nodes these can be found near shorelines or in pools throughout azeroth. However depending on your skill and want there are a variety of pools and different boxes, including: Tightly sealed, water tight, iron bound, mithril bound, curious crate, inscribed scrollcase, heavy supply crate, and the reinforced crate.
A prized possession in the fishing community is the weather beaten journal that "teaches you the fine art of fish finding", meaning you will be able to track the swirling pools making your fishing life a whole lot easier. This can be found in the curious crate (with the best drop rate of about 50%) though they are harder to fish up, the heavy supply, mithril bound, iron bound, and the water tight crates. The journal, while having to stay in it's crate otherwise it binds to you, can sell for tens of gold on the auction block to potential buyers. It is a hot demand item and can net you big coins.
If you are going to go out fishing though there are a few tips you should know and should follow. If you are fishing in nodes make sure you have empty packs. There is nothing so heartbreaking as losing a good catch of a trunk should your packs be full and somehow you close the catch window! It has happened to me on several occasions, where I have accidentally opened the world map to spot my location (key M) and my catch disappears. This usually happens when you are unaware of a full pack and you just expect your find to auto loot into your pack. Always check for room in your bags. Also, always carry with you your fishing pole and lures. You never know when you might find that swirling circle of flotsam or debris. Not to mention fishing is a great time investment while waiting for boats at the dock, or waiting for your pick up groups to ready themselves.
