Misery is caused by the many sins of today's world, but one in particular, which is love of self. Self-loving is the leader of all the rest of the sins, which we commit because we want for ourselves, no matter what it takes to get it. This attitude of today's society is no surprise. It is prophesied in the Bible for the last days.
We are not living the way God intended us to live, and while society ignores this fact, we are as corrupt as the people that God destroyed in the flood. This self-loving attitude leaves us miserable, individually and as a society, and here are some examples:
Society breaks down into sides as we argue about such things as racism, homosexuality, abortion rights, and religion. The many world views rule the roost, when in reality, we should be turning to the Bible for the answers. Of course, people can't turn to the Bible when they don't believe it to be their manual to life, right? In any case, we see lovers of self come out, as we just want to be right or superior to another color. We are lovers' of self when we feel our own beliefs and wants rate higher than God's.
Our homeless, needy, and unemployed are evidence of our self-loving society. Bless the ones who heed the cries of these people, but the hearing people are few. Society has become every man for himself and therefore, cannot pull together to come up with solutions for the people in need. There are solutions and relief but people must become lovers of others to make it work.
As lovers of self, many have abused the system to get what they want, which has made the system largely fallible. People who apply for programs they should be immediately eligible for must go through much red tape, and may still be turned down because of all the manipulation that goes on in today's world. So even though we have a system that is supposed to work, it doesn't.
As lovers of self, we are miserable when we don't get what we want, and miserable when we do, because we want more. We don't know our blessings, only our wants. We are so busy worried about ourselves, that we don't hear the man crying next to us. And what about that man crying next to us?
Some have cried wolf so many times, that we turn a deaf ear to all of it. Those who are genuinely crying cannot be heard. Some people do want to better their conditions in an unselfish way, but they cannot do it alone. They need some help and guidance. But where do they turn to? They too, are miserable.
When a man is lover of himself, he will try to get what
