I've had a lot of weird neighbors throughout the years but Peggy was the strangest of them all. She and her husband Elbert lived next door to us for three years and she was always watching and scrutinizing every move I made. Occasionally my husband and Elbert would stand out in the yard and talk, but Peggy very seldom ventured out of her house, and if she did, it was always out the back door. Elbert said she didn't like people very much because she was not use to them living right next door to her.
Supposedly, they lived in a very secluded place before having to sell and move here. Elbert said they ended up here due to family issues. Elbert was considerably older than my husband and he seemed to be OK, nothing out of the ordinary, always working and piddling around in his yard, tending to his dogs and working on his lawn mower.
On the days when I was doing my laundry, I would sometimes hang a few things on the line. I suppose she watched for me, because I would see her out of the corner of my eye coming out her back door. She would crouch down behind the hedge and watch me, saying nothing, just watching. Finally, one day I turned and looked her way and said "hi Peggy"; she turned and scurried as fast as she could back into her house. This went on for what seemed like months, until one day she startled me by calling me over to the fence.
Having never seen her at such close range before I was shocked to see how beautiful she was! From a distance she appeared rather haggard and frumpy, but as I approached her I could see that her complexion was like porcelain and her eyes were crystal blue. Her hair had gray in it but it was still mostly light brown. She kept it pulled up on the top of her head with just a few strands that hung loose. She was much younger than I thought.
As I approached the fence she put her finger to her lips to caution me to be very quiet. I asked her if she was alright and she whispered "they're in my house"; and I nervously asked, "who's in your house Peggy"? She pointed to her house; "they are" she said. At that point I was scared; I told her to stay down behind the bushes and wait for me to come back. I ran through the back door of my house and called the police, and then I went back out to wait with her for them to arrive. Very shortly they arrived and I told them what happened. They went into Peggy's home only to startle Elbert who was sleeping on the sofa.
Elbert said "she does this a lot". "She thinks aliens are watching her".
A few weeks went by and she was at the fence again. I waved to her and she motioned for me to come over to her. She told me everything was OK now because the police told her what to do; and then she asked me for aluminum foil.
Evidently the police told her to cover her windows with aluminum foil and that would keep the aliens out of her house. I asked her if it worked, and she said yes; but she was out of foil.
