to human frailty and suffering. There are days when you might laugh until you cry but you will also cry until you laugh; and you will share it all with a few like yourself, who may become the best friends you will ever have. In addition, there will be moments you'd rather not remember, but more you will never forget.
If you're concerned because you haven't dreamed of being a nurse all your life, or because your mom, aunt or grandmother didn't even encourage you to become a member of this profession, it's okay. Nursing doesn't have to be a calling from God. It doesn't need to be planned from birth. A career in nursing can be the result of a pursuit in favor of something else, something that led you down another path until you came upon this one, and now you find yourself taking a closer look. There is tremendous latitude in the field of nursing, so many specialties, so many options, and the salaries are better than could reasonably be expected from many other fields requiring the same educational background.
A career in nursing can be as diverse as the millions of men and women who have made it their career choice. There is no screening for age, ethnicity, national origin, gender or personal preferences. You don't have to be blonde, brunette, skinny, tall or gaunt and you won't need a great wardrobe. You don't have to be clever, dress like GQ or aspire to acquiring a Porsche, a second home or a Harley. You just have to be you and want to be a nurse. You will be in great demand.
Is a career in nursing right for you? Only you can answer the question. The national, professional organization for registered nurses is the American Nurses Association (ANA). There is an abundance of information regarding a career in nursing on their website at http://www.nursingworld.org.
