Teachers' tips for successful homework assignments

to teach the technique as you go. Continue to then explain the other technical parts of the next three body paragraphs and the conclusion like a formula (create a power point presentation) and for homework, have students read famous essays (on-line or in textbook) and identify how this formula was applied. Give them the opportunity to teach what they've learned to you, and you've got yourself a recipe for success! To teach it, you have to learn it, so again, it's another less grueling way of getting them engaged to do homework that doesn't feel like work.

Math homework can include "math in careers", where students look into careers that would utilize certain math skills to accomplish the work. Other English or language based homework assignments may include the development of a word game like the game of "Password." Instead of formal preparation homework for testing, have students study to prepare to participate in a game of "Jeopardy". Foreign language projects (conversational) could include the creation of familiar game boards like "Candy Land" all recreated in another language.

Although in many cases, homework is an integral part of the overall grade for students in their subjects, students are not always motivated by the grade to complete their assignments. For those students who are not motivated by the grades, creating an incentive program for students with the ability to earn points and trade those points for privledges is another way to entice them into practicing the behavior of responsibility. Homework assignments in this case can be as simple as students bringing in research, articles, items, etc. to share in class as it relates to the topic. Students earn incentive points for participating and it becomes an opportunity for students to stay involved, and it's fun!

Being creative is the key. A passionate approach to the subject matter is as important as the quality of the material being taught. Homework is another way for teachers to take that passion beyond the classroom and instill it in the students by offering learning opportunities that are different, fun and effective.
