One thing animal lovers can't bear is the thought of an animal being abused. Pets - who bless us with their unconditional love and loyalty - should never be mis-treated. We all have the responsibility to look out for our fellow creatures.

Ideally, the best thing to do if you suspect animal abuse is to adopt the pet as your own. Talk to the owner of the pet, and try to make the person see the advantage of your taking the animal away. If necessary, bring the animal to the vet or a groomer to take care of the problem. The pet may be frightened and suspicious- he may have gone thru a traumatic experience. Speak gently- move slowly- give plenty of tender loving care. Once this pet sees that you have rescued him and will treat him kindly, he will probably be the most loving pet that you have ever had!

However, whether for financial reasons or other, it may be that you cannot keep the creature. The next best thing is to call the Humane Society. Don't call the Animal Control - they are not there to help the animals. Call the Humane Society - The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They will help the rescue the pet and find him a proper home.

Also, you can rescue the pet, and bring him to a no-kill shelter. Explain that you suspect animal abuse, and that you do not have the resources to care for the pet yourself. The shelter will treat the animal, and keep him until a good home is found.

Animal abuse is against the law. The most important thing to do if you suspect animal abuse is to rescue the animal. Take him out of that bad situation. If he is hurt, take him to a veterinarian and have him treated. If his hair is matted, take him to a groomer to have it shaved off. If you cannot afford these services, bring him to a no-kill shelter.

The next step is to notify the Humane Society - not Animal Control - of the problem, and give the address of the suspected owners. You can remain anonymous. People who practice animal abuse need to be punished and prevented from continuing this abuse with another animal.

We need to speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves. Thankfully, the humane animal protection laws have become stricter. People who mis-treat animals now must serve prison time and/or pay fines. It is worth it to take that extra step if you suspect animal abuse. You will have saved an animal's life, and ensured that he be given a chance for the quality life that he deserves. And you will have a wonderful feeling inside.
