The Republicans have a lot of work to do if they plan to regain the White House in 2012. What seems like an impossible task is actually quite feasible if they pull together and get to work right away. The road back to the White House is paved with 10 simple steps.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Step 1:
The first thing the Republicans need to do is re-establish their base. During the last 8 years the Republicans have been solely catering to their right-winged base, not only ignoring the moderate Republicans but virtually disenfranchising them. The importance of attracting the more moderate Republicans cannot be emphasized enough. Republican cannot win an election with only the right-wing voters. They not only need to include moderate republicans, they need to also expand their appeal to independent voters as well.
Step 2:
Republicans need to change their rhetoric. In the last campaign many Republicans were viewed as fear-mongers or worse hate-mongers. Republicans need to raise the bar on political rhetoric. They need to operate from the premise that voters are intelligent and that they should be respected. Information must be presented honestly without the need to dissect and digest it for voters.
Step 3:
Republicans need to welcome disagreement. True leaders have a voluntary following. People do not follow them for fear of losing their jobs or positions. Republicans need to establish honor within the party. This is done by listening to all the voices, including those with dissenting opinions.
Step 4:
Republicans need to start taking a political stand and stop taking moral stands. By taking a moral stand from everything from same-sex marriages to sex education in schools, Republicans again alienated those within their party who have very different moral and personal views. Moral issues are not exclusive to any one party. It is possible to be a Republican who supports Roe V Wade or a Democrat who believes in God.
Step 5:
Republicans need to move back to the basic principles on which the party was established. They need to once again advocate for less intrusive government. They need to allow for more autonomy within state governments. They need to take a lead in re-establishing the civil liberties that were trampled upon by the Bush administration.
Step 6:
Republicans need to spearhead innovative ideas that lead to job creation. This can be done by suggesting tax breaks and cuts, something Republicans naturally love, to companies
