Poetry: Rain

by Darren James Clayton

Created on: November 17, 2008

A black cloud
Approaches.
You ignore the sirens,
It's thunderous call,
And walk on,
Your back turned,
A shadow in your stride.

The heavens open,
As blackness falls about you,
And the rain comes.
Where is he now?

The rain comes.
Falling down,
Down upon you
It's damp presence
Climbs into every crevice,
Every weakness.

It's waters quickly
Deepen,
Until you wade.
You wade and wade
Never reaching
That far-off place
Of salvation.
Your legs begin to ache.

Ever the rain pours,
And ever the waters rise.
Until a deep sea surrounds,
An endless sea of misery
And despair.

The waves crash
And the wind screams.
A scream that echoes endlessly.
Can anyone else hear it?

An island is seen from afar.
Reaching it you almost drown.
Stranded you call,
But the answer is not heard.
In the middle of an ocean
You stand.
Can you swim home?
