Christmas is a time for family and friends, and most importantly the love we share for one another. Some might lose sight of this main priority, especially during the hustle and bustle of last minute shopping and dinner preparations. It's stressful when you forget the purpose behind holidays. It's not about the toys, though some kids might disagree but about the time spent together. For those of you feeling the warmth of Christmas set aside for last minute pressing tasks, keep in mind a few things that might allow a reprieve. And remember, happiness doesn't have to involve work work work.
If you're looking to get the Christmas spirit roaring here are some ideas:
FOLLOW TRADITION: Set up your tree and decorate as a family, or watch that same movie you watch every year on Christmas eve while stringing popcorn. Traditions don't have to include old fashioned ideals and customs. They can be created this year even! Just do something as a family, or with friends, that will allow for relaxing, laughs, and merriment. Christmas is about being merry and jolly. Sip your eggnog while playing board games, or drive around the neighborhood comparing Christmas bulb light shows.
BAKE: Decorating cookies or even baking store bought dough will fill the home with delicious scents and a warm feeling. They also make great gifts, or allow for quality time with the family.
DECORATE: Decorate a tree, no matter the size and string the garland along the stairway banister. A little sparkle and some color can go a long way in assuring you the holiday is about more than shopping.
QUALITY TIME: Family and friends deserve more of you than a store bought gift can provide. If you share laughs, and talk about past memories you will give them the quality time they will remember. Presents cannot replace the time spent alongside family members. So while you're out shopping remember that the stress isn't entirely worth it. Sure, you might feel happier knowing you have a present for so and so, but eventually you'll stress yourself out searching for the perfect material thing, and meanwhile you're missing out on the season itself. Take time not only for family, but for yourself, and spend time dwelling on the fact that this is a beautiful holiday meant to spread joy. Do not turn into a cranky shopper.
Give this holiday season and share in the fun. You do not have to take on the stress to make everybody happy.
